Monday March 3rd update

First of all let me wish my beautiful wife Allison a Happy Birthday today!!!. Unfortunately today she is sick. Talk about bad luck... to be sick on your birthday is the worst luck of all. We are doing our best to take care of her though.

Dawson has had a better day today. Only two clusters of seizures and we got word from his Neuro that she wants him to start the Topamax tonight. Wonder what that stuff will do to him??
He has been in a much better mood today though.

I want to say how much we appreciate the comments being left behind for us. They have been helpful and encouraging so thank you to our friends and family who are leaving comments for us. We LOVE hearing from you guys. God bless you all for all the prayers you have offered up for Dawson and us. Continue to pray as we seek God's will for our lives through this. He is using Dawson to accomplish some pretty awesome things.

We pray also that starting the Topamax will make a huge difference in stopping these seizures.

Thank you for checking in on him

We love yall

Jeff and Allison

Has Dawson ever tried Zonegran? I've heard that Topomax and Zonegran work through similar mechanisms. I've also heard that Topomax (and we've experienced the same with Zonegran) can cause major appetite suppression, just something to keep in mind!! Dawson looks like a big boy, so I don't know if you would need to worry about that. Reagan has never been a good eater, so it was always a major concern for us. Good luck...I hope it will knock out Dawson's seizures!!!

Oh the lovely Topamax! Man did we ever hate this med. Cameran was on it for a year and a half. Lets see she started it the week before Christmas she was just 10 months old, she stopped eating and drinking and her temp shot up. We called the Neuro and they told us to stop it immediately. So we did, they gave it a few days and started her back on it at a lower dose. It did the trick and she became seizure free on Christmas Day and remained so for 4.5 weeks but the seizures returned. But we gained lots of ground during that time she started to babble and learned how to walk! Camerans eating and drinking never got better while on this med, it wasnt as severe as when she first started it but she ended up having to see a Feeding Therapist weekly for her food adversions a side effect to this med. But sometimes you have to deal with minor problems to have seizure freedom. Her eating problems still exsist but thats where her Sensory Disorder kicks in.

A BIGGY with Topamax is they do not sweat while on this med causing their temps to rise quickly so try to avoid long stretches outside. Camerans whole body would turn red after 20 minutes outside so we would have to take her in to cool her down and her temp would be up too. So be cautious! And lastly I want you to know that we have a very close friend that is in his 40's and had to take this med for Migraines and he ended up stopping the med he said he could NOT concentrate like he could hear people talking but not pull the info in! We saw huge improvements with Camerans attetnion skills after removing this med. BUT she was seizure free at the time, the seizures make it hard for them to learn too so you have your pros and cons! But all meds are worth a shot.

So best wishes with it I really hope it helps him, it did in many ways with Cameran!

we havent tried the zonogran yet. We were on Topamax in the very begenning of this. It was the first med he was on. It was a very small dose and he wasn't on it very long. Not sure why we are going back on it as opposed to trying something new?? And as far as appetite is concerned. Well I would be surprised if it effected his as he has never missed a meal as you can see from the pictures. Thanks for the comment

I have heard of great results with Topomax, we wanted to try it but were afraid to because of Reagan's already fussy eating. I think you'd be surprised about what these medicines can do even to healthy appetites. Just keep an eye on him. As far as the preventing them from sweating...
Zonegran was supposed to do that too, but I never noticed it in Reagan. We were careful not to take her outside when it was too hot (especially living in hot, humid Houston) but only because we knew the potential was there.
